Yoga Is More Than Asanas
Yoga Is More Than Asanas
Today, yoga is often reduced to asanas and pranayama, yet these are only the threshold of the vast and sacred science of Ashtanga Yoga. Asanas were never meant to be spectacles of flexibility or restless motion. If bending the body were yoga, then every acrobat would stand illumined.
The understanding of yoga today is largely limited to asanas and pranayams. Yet asanas are only one eighth of the complete science of Ashtang Yoga.
Asanas do not mean tying yourself in knots or jumping like a monkey. If that were the case, acrobats would be called yogis.
Today, yoga is often reduced to asanas and pranayama, yet these are only the threshold of the vast and sacred science of Ashtanga Yoga. Asanas were never meant to be spectacles of flexibility or restless motion. If bending the body were yoga, then every acrobat would stand illumined.
The body we see is but the outer veil;
beneath it subtler realms, perceived through awakened inner sight. Yoga always begins at the silent center and unfolds outward like light from a hidden flame.
Asanas too arise from the core of being and extend gently to the farthest edges of form. A sculpted body or pleasing shape is only a passing shadow. The true purpose of asanas rests in the timeless wisdom of the Patanjali Yoga Sutras.
Our physical body is only a reflection; there are layers beyond it, perceivable through clairvoyance.
Yoga works from the core to the periphery, and asanas are no different. Toning the body or giving it a desirable shape is merely a by product. The true purpose of asanas is clearly explained in the Patanjali Yog Sutras.
